If you are a webmaster you surely know the website Sitepoint which, among other things, has a nice marketplace where webmasters can sell and buy websites, services, templates and everything else that is webmaster related. Sitepoint has probably the nicest layout of all webmaster forums that offer a marketplace. It still is only a forum and you have to click on a sale thread to view the details. With dozens of new threads each day this can be a very repetitive task.

When I analyze competitors I do a so called whois on the owner of the domain name, and all other contacts listed in the domain whois, to find out more about their background. Is the competitor a large cooperation, an individual, an organization ? This is important to know because it could keep you from trying to get more backlinks to your website than a company with a advertising budget that exceeds your annual income.

Click Through Rate (CTR) is one of the most important terms for webmasters who have added ads to their website or blog. While most advertising companies display the click through rate some do not. Bidvertiser for instance does not display the CTR of the ads in the statistics (only in the summary but not for individual ad units). CTR is one of the key elements in comparing advertisers and optimizing ads on websites, for pay per click programs that is. Other key elements are overal earnings and cash per click (cpc).

It is always a good idea to know your competition and one aspect is to know which other websites and domains they own to get an idea of their capability to push a website. This can be done by checking other websites that are hosted at the same IP of a website that you want to check out. This does not always bring the desired result though and is only useful if the competitor uses his own server. Additional IPs and servers make it more difficulty but it is still a good way to learn a few things about the competitor.
