When I take my daily walk through my subscribed webmaster forums I happen to see lots of questions about placements of Adsense ad units. Many ask for reviews, some want to know the best performing units and others want general guidelines. Most of the time someone posts the Adsense heatmaps that have been posted on the official Google Adsense blog or tell the person asking the question to use the large or medium rectangle unit and blend it into their design.

Basically said, everything is a niche. There are big niches and small niches, take Politics for example. There is world politics, US politics, Californian politics, Arnold Schwarzenegger politics, New York politics, Manhattan politics and so on. It is generally easier to compete in a smaller niche because there is less competition, if any. It also means less traffic if you compare spots on search engines but most niches provide enough visitors to create a successful website that adds great income.

Adsense does not guarantee constant earnings or a constant rise in earnings. It depends on many factors including the websites traffic sources, the Adwords advertisers, the competition for the keywords, your keywords, the ads the visitors click on, certain internal Google factors and a lot more. I used to view my stats several times a day and panicked whenever I saw a drop or a bad performance. It’s only natural that some days perform better than others and you have to live with it.
